Ianiki

One of the Home at Last Rescue rescue volunteers was walking a cute little pit bull named Monique. She had been in the Berkeley pound for six months or something. No one wanted to adopt her because she was so excited to see everyone! When anyone came near she bounced up and down off the roof of her crate...which made people nervous. She also had rashes and just didn't show well in the pound.

Anyway, my ex-wife brought her home for a 'test drive' and we fell head over tails for her. But we soon figured out that we needed help training her. After a week or two we had to change her name to the Ianiki, which was the name of a hurricane that hit Hawaii a few years ago. She was pulling us down the road on the leash and trying to take after every dog that walked by us. It was a little scary even though she was great with kids and never showed the least bit of aggression toward people of any kind. Unless you include jumping up and giving licky hello's to nervous bystanders.

Well, the Home at Last folks recommended Kathy as a trainer and after a few meet and greets we went for it. Kathy came over and did an evaluation to make sure we were committed, and to see if we would fit in with the 'style' of training that she adheres to.

We listened to Kathy's spiel and read up on Alon Geva's work. We also looked into a few alternatives. But after all the research, Kathy's approach made the most sense to us so we decided to go for it.

Ianiki became a completely different dog and has made a bunch of new friends. She will heel and come on command. She doesn't tear across the field at the nearest critter that appears. We've been able to let her play free with other dogs and generally have fun. Best of all, we feel like we're in charge instead of the other way around.

I guess the biggest thing is learning to become a responsible dog owner, and take on the role of Alpha dog, so Ianiki can relax and have fun. We highly recommend Kathy Kear to new or old members of any dog family. It turns out old dogs can learn new tricks. We did!
